Responses Through Performance and Sharing Stories
There have been numerous inspiring examples of creating platforms for Ukrainian music and amplifying the voices of Ukrainian musicians across the music community.
Our partners at ACDA issued a statement expressing solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and shared a video of its Western Region conference’s All-Sing performance of “A Prayer for Ukraine,” conducted by Lou De La Rosa.
New Music USA published an article from Ukrainian-born composer Anna Pidgorna, currently studying at Princeton University, sharing her personal experience and insights on Ukrainian musicians in the midst of the conflict.
Vocalists from Kitka, an Oakland-based women's vocal ensemble inspired by the music of Eastern Europe and Eurasia, have organized A Song for Ukraine: Vocal Workshop and Fundraiser for Artist-led Humanitarian Aid on Sunday, March 13. Proceeds will benefit artist-led humanitarian aid in war zones.
Classical Movements, a tour company and concert organizer in the DC area, is hosting a Concert for Ukraine on March 22 featuring repertoire by Bedřich Smetana and Ukrainian composers. A portion of the ticket sales proceeds, and the entirety of additional donations, will be donated to Doctors Without Borders in support of their relief efforts in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus of North America, which consists of musicians all across the U.S. and Canada, is raising funds for humanitarian support through recordings and benefit concerts.
The Hoosli Ukrainian Male Chorus performed the Canadian and Ukrainian national anthems at a National Hockey League game in Winnipeg, MB and was interviewed by CBC.
As tensions were mounting before the invasion began, Jerusalem Youth Chorus founder and artistic director Micah Hendler penned a column in Forbes on Ukrainian music’s rich history and importance in the country’s long struggle to resist oppression.
The Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York performed to open Saturday Night Live on February 26.
