On February 10, the President released his proposed budget for fiscal year 2021. For the fourth year in a row, the proposal includes a provision to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), along with several other cultural agencies.
It's important to remember that there is a solid foundation of bipartisan support for the NEA and the arts. Last year, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) received an increase for fiscal year 2020 for a total funding level of $162.25 million, while the Assistance for Arts Education (AAE) program fund at the U.S. Department of Education actually received a $1 million increase for a total funding level of $30 million.
In addition to eliminating the NEA, the administration proposes:
This March 30-31, Chorus America will join arts advocates from around the country as a National Partner for the National Arts Action Summit. Advocates will be urging Congress to fund the NEA at $170 million for FY2021.
Continue to let lawmakers know about the important role the arts play in your community. You can contact your legislators today to share your support for the NEA through Chorus America's partner, the Performing Arts Alliance.
A face-to-face meeting with an elected official when they are in their home district or state is even more effective. This Calendar of Opportunities published by the League of American Orchestras explains when legislators are likely to be in their home states, and includes advocacy suggestions that are easily adaptable for choruses.
