Expanding Our Communities As We Share Music Digitally
The Varied Formats of Finding Connection Amid COVID-19
As self-quarantining and social distancing continue amid the outbreak of COVID-19 in North America and around the globe, more choruses are finding new ways to get their music and message out to their communities who are at home. Here are a handful of choral broadcasts we've seen start up in recent days.
Hosted by music director Anthony Blake Clark, Baltimore Choral Arts has introduced a digital mini-series Music With The Maestro on Facebook Live. The weekly series, airing Thursdays at 5pm ET, features small chamber ensemble performances - with performers at an appropriate social distance - led by Clark.
Every day at noon, artistic director Robert Simpson and the 2020 Grammy-winning Houston Chamber Choir present favorite moments from past performances on their new With One Accord podcast. Selections are chosen particularly to address the isolation that many of us are feeling. The podcast will run for several weeks.
In a quick five minutes, VocalEssence Associate Conductor G. Phillip Shoultz, III will kick off your morning with hope and health on Take Five With GPS. The program is a time for centering, reflecting, and gratitude, and will include wellness components, poems, and - of course - song. The inaugural broadcast will air live on Facebook and YouTube on Monday, March 30 at 9:00am CT, and posted on VocalEssence's website and YouTube page to watch later.
In addition, VocalEssence has launched two other digital programs: Musical Moments, a lunchtime series celebrating important composers in the organization's history with artistic director Philip Brunelle; and Sounds of Hope, a singing challenge from youth choir VocalEssence Singers Of This Age sharing videos of uplifting songs along with short inspirational messages.
2020 JUNO-nominated Vancouver men’s chorus Chor Leoni is combining elements of podcasting and TV to create its new virtual livestream, Chor Leoni Inside. Artistic director Erik Lichte hosts the series, which features interviews with musical luminaries, artwork from local artists, and highlights from Chor Leoni's concert videos and albums. The livestream premieres with guest Ethan Sperry on Wednesday, April 1 at 7:00pm PST.
